Position Available:

RURAL CONSERVATION, FOOD JUSTICE AND FOOD WASTE RESEARCH ASSISTANT

ORGANIZATION: Sustainable Brant (Better Brant)

LOCATION: Brantford, Ontario (near Hamilton, Cambridge)

ELIGIBILITY: Must be 30 years old or younger and a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant (Federal grant requirement).

HOUSING: Optional rental accommodation is available on the farm

ABOUT US:

Promoting Rural Ecological Planning and Conservation, Food Justice and the Redistribution of Food Waste 

We are a not for profit group working to ensure sustainable and just rural policies in Brant County and Brantford. We have been involved in policy related research and outreach work since 2008, such as

  • land use planning (e.g. official plans, agricultural land use policy, Provincial Policy Statement, Greenbelt consultation, Federal Inquiry on the Acquisition of Farmland in Canada)
  • land trusts, conservation easements on farmland
  • Restoration of wetlands and forest trails
  • food justice (with a focus on migrant farm workers)
  • food waste and food redistribution

Job Description

You will be helping us with

  • reviewing, researching and critiquing policies and issues related to our work, and preparing reports related to this
  • community outreach to residents in Brantford and Brant County including migrant farm workers (articles, flyers, social media)
  • hands on work related to
    • food waste (sorting, redistributing)
    • outreach to migrant farm workers (food delivery, possibly ESL, bikes for migrant farm workers)
    • rehabilitation of a forest trail
    • restoration of a wetland

Skills Required:

We’re looking for someone who

  • is collaborative and respectful of others
  • has good interpersonal skills, particularly with seniors and migrant farm workers
  • demonstrates good research and writing skills
  • show initiative
  • demonstrates an interest in working on issues related to our work

Assets:

  • Spanish speaking
  • experience with community based research
  • social media skills
  • ESL experience
  • driver’s license, access to vehicle
  • book-keeping (ideally QuickBooks)
  • experience working with a land trust, conservation or environmental organization

Hours, Pay & Term: 

$15.50/hr, 35 hours per week for 8 months
